Abstract
The state of the theory of long term behavior of cataclysmic variables is reviewed and the basic assumptions are specified. Next, despite the fact that the nova phenomenon is treated as a periodic one, secular changes caused by the changes in the masses of the binary system must be taken into account as well as other secular changes in the parameters of the system. In most reported calculation in the literature this extremely important changes are ignored. Preliminary results showing the effects of these changes on the evolution are presented.
