A Rule-Based Decision-Support System for Personalized Health Risk Assessment of Packaged Foods

Abstract
The increasing consumption of packaged foods makes it difficult for individuals to make informed dietary decisions. This study presents a rule-based decision-support system developed within a Citizen Science framework to evaluate the health risks of packaged foods. The system analyzes nutritional data obtained either through food label images or manual input and provides personalized assessments based on user characteristics such as age and gender. A pilot test conducted on 20 food products showed that approximately 85–90% of the items were classified in accordance with established nutritional guidelines. The results suggest that the proposed approach can support accessible and interpretable health risk evaluation and promote public engagement in preventive healthcare.
