Whilst the involvement of experts-by-experience in health research has gained traction over the past decades and is increasingly required by funding agencies, there remains a problem of implementation as well as a problem of meaningfulness. So the question arises what attitudes, knowledge and skills researchers-by-training need to meaningfully engage in participatory health research, and how these competencies can be taught. To address this challenge, a Solution Room following the principles of Participatory Action Research was facilitated at CS4H2025.
27 participants from 7 European countries contributed their experience, thoughts and ideas and what content ought to be taught and how. As attitudes are typically cultivated through experiential, relational and reflective learning processes in which learners encounter and enact the very principles under discussion, particular emphasis was given to experiential teaching formats.
Next steps that we hope to pursue further in the community of practice initiated at the workshop are discussed.
