A new fixed-target experiment proposed at the LHC, ALADDIN (An LHC Apparatus for Direct Dipole moments INvestigation), is presented. The experiment aims to provide the first direct measurement of the electric and magnetic dipole moments of charmed baryons. These measurements would open a new window in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model, extending electric dipole moments studies to the charm sector, which has so far remained largely unexplored due to their extremely short lifetime.
The experiment uses the halo of the LHC proton beam, extracted onto a fixed target where charmed baryons are produced. The channeling of charged particles in bent crystals is exploited to deflect the charmed baryons and induce a measurable spin precession, whose magnitude and direction are sensitive to their electric and magnetic dipole moments. The decay products are reconstructed and identified using a magnetic spectrometer and a RICH detector.
The feasibility of this approach has been demonstrated through the TWOCRYST proof-of-principle experiment at the LHC. The results and lessons learned from TWOCRYST, together with the experimental concept and expected sensitivity of ALADDIN, are presented.
