Abstract
The ALICE Collaboration is preparing for a major detector upgrade, ALICE 3, scheduled for data collection during LHC Run 5 and beyond. A critical component of this upgrade is the Muon Identifier (MID), designed to tag muons with transverse momenta as low as $p_T = 1.5$ GeV/c at mid-rapidity ($\vert{}\eta\vert{} \leq 1.3$), essential for the reconstruction of $J/\psi$ at rest. Given the expected particle fluence of a few Hz/cm², Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) are a primary candidate technology due to their excellent timing and cost-effectiveness. This work presents the development and beam test performance of double-gap glass RPC prototypes constructed at Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP). A distinguishing feature of these detectors is the implementation of additive manufacturing (3D printing) for critical mechanical components ensuring rapid and precise assembly. The prototypes were instrumented with a custom-developed Front-End Card (FEC) based on the PETIROC2A ASIC. Experimental validation was conducted at the CERN T10 beam line, evaluating efficiency, timing resolution, and response under various operating conditions. Results demonstrate a detection efficiency exceeding 90% and a time resolution better than 1 ns, providing strong evidence of the feasibility of this design for the ALICE 3 muon detection requirements.
