News coverage of the LHC-CERN collaboration in Brazil
Abstract
In 2024, Brazil became an Associate Member State of CERN, formalizing its national participation in the collaboration that has been ongoing since the 1980s. Brazil has thus assumed a prominent position, with the ability to appoint representatives to collaboration meetings, in addition to expanding the involvement of Brazilians in positions and postgraduate programs. Seeking to understand how journalistic content about CERN and Brazil’s national involvement in the collaboration is communicated, we analyzed news articles from two major Brazilian online newspapers published between 2020 and 2025. We aimed to explore how written content about the collaboration is produced, highlighting the sources consulted, the topics covered, and how the texts are constructed using web scraping tools to collect and organize the data for our analysis. We emphasize the commitment of science journalism to producing high-quality content, as well as fostering critical analysis and dialogue between science and various fields, promoting discussions about national participation in experiments of major global importance and engaging Brazilian society in conversations about science policy within the Latin American scientific context. Finally, we underscore the importance of high-quality communication in enabling the democratization of knowledge through critical engagement and the appropriation of scientific knowledge in this field.
