Benchmark TPC Trigger for the DUNE HD Far Detector
Abstract
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next-generation long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with a far detector (FD) design based on state-of-the-art Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) technology, which allows for detailed reconstruction of particle interactions. The primary science goals of the DUNE include precision tests of the three-flavour neutrino oscillation paradigm, searches Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, and the observation of astrophysical neutrinos. Supporting such a broad physics programme requires a self-trigger capable of identifying physics signatures across a wide energy range. In addition, the detector’s large scale and fine-grained readout introduce stringent constraints on real-time processing and storage resources that the trigger needs to adhere to. This note presents an inclusive, software-based TPC trigger pipeline for the DUNE FD-HD module, capable of triggering on MeV-GeV scale neutrino interactions within a unified framework. A simplified baseline implementation, developed for performance benchmarking, already meets all of FD’s trigger specifications, demonstrating its capability to fully support the physics goals of DUNE. Future iterations will build upon this initial design to further refine and optimise the underlying algorithms.
