The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a flagship next-generation neutrino oscillation experiment. Relying on Liquid Argon TPC technology, the most powerful (anti-)muon neutrino beam ever built, and a 1300 km baseline, it will achieve unprecedented precision in measurements of CP violation in the lepton sector and will ultimately establish the neutrino mass ordering.
The DUNE Far Detectors will be equipped with a capable Photon Detection System (PDS) to improve the accuracy of neutrino event reconstruction and to enable astroparticle studies by providing triggers for natural neutrino events.
We provide an overview of the PDS technology and its implementation in the DUNE Horizontal-Drift module. We present recent ProtoDUNE-HD results from CERN on signal-to-noise ratio, dynamic range, timing resolution, and self-trigger efficiency, showing that the system meets the corresponding DUNE technical requirements. We also report recent studies of liquid-argon scintillation. Throughout, we relate the measured performance to the physics capabilities it enables.
