Abstract
Signal saturation occurs when the amplitude of an electronic signal exceeds a detector’s dynamic range, clipping the waveform peak and causing amplitude information to be lost. Standard reconstruction techniques, such as the Time-over-Threshold (ToT) method, rely on a known relationship between pulse amplitude and width to restore peak height. However, these linear approximations break down under pulse pile-up particularly present in scintillating media, where two-component emission profiles, extended particle trajectories, Rayleigh scattering and wavelength shifting materials broaden photon detection times. In this work, we present a novel Time-over-Saturation approach designed to overcome these limitations. We show that targeting solely the saturated portion of the signal, rather than reconstructing the full charge or total width, outperforms traditional ToT schemes. The proposed method is validated using simulated liquid argon waveforms and experimental data from the ProtoDUNE Vertical Drift photon detection system (featuring X-ARAPUCA devices), demonstrating robust reconstruction under complex timing distributions.
