Multi-messenger astrophysics combines multifrequency astronomy in the electromagnetic domain with non photonic information carriers, gravitational waves, neutrinos, cosmic rays, to provide complementary information about cosmic sources. The present paper reviews the recent developments in the instrumentation and the first results of multi-messenger astronomy: the detection of a binary neutron star merger and of high energy neutrinos from a cosmic source.
