Abstract
Open heavy flavor and quarkonium observables are well established probes of the hot system produced in heavy-ion collisions. Open heavy flavor production is better under control than quarkonium in $p + p$ collisions due to uncertainties in the production mechanism. Newer observables such as correlated heavy flavor decays and production of exotics such as tetraquarks are generating added excitement. Recent highlights from $p + p$ and $p + A$ collisions are presented here.
